People Come Into Your Life for a Reason, a Season, or a Lifetime
This is a blog post inspired by one of my favourite poems called Reason, Season and a Lifetime- By Brian A. “Drew” Chalker
Have you ever looked back at the people who have crossed your path and wondered why they were part of your journey? Some may have left a deep impact, while others seemed to drift away without much notice. There’s a timeless idea that people come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime—and understanding this can help us find peace and purpose in our relationships.
For a Reason
Sometimes, people enter our lives to fulfil a specific need or teach us an important lesson. These are the “reason” relationships—they come with a purpose.
- Maybe they helped you through a tough time.
- Perhaps they opened your eyes to a new perspective.
- They could have given you the courage or tools you needed to grow.
These connections may not last forever, but their impact can be life-changing. Recognizing the reason behind their presence helps us appreciate what they brought into our lives, even if their chapter with us has closed.
For a Season
Seasonal relationships are like the phases of life—they’re there for a specific period, enriching us in ways we may not fully understand at the time.
- A close friend during college who helped you navigate those formative years.
- A mentor who guided you in your early career.
- A romantic partner who helps you discover what you want—or don’t want—in love.
These relationships often end when their purpose has been served, leaving behind cherished memories and valuable lessons. Accepting their temporary nature can bring gratitude rather than grief when they fade.
For a Lifetime
Then there are the rare and precious relationships that stand the test of time. These are the people who walk alongside you through life’s twists and turns, offering love, support, and companionship.
- Lifelong friends who’ve seen you at your best and your worst.
- Family members who remain your anchors.
- Partners or spouses who grow with you and weather life’s storms together.
Lifetime relationships require effort, mutual respect, and nurturing. They are treasures, reminding us of the beauty of connection and the strength found in enduring bonds.
Embracing the Flow of Relationships
Not every relationship is meant to last forever, and that’s okay. People come and go, often leaving their mark in ways we don’t fully grasp until later. By embracing the ebb and flow of connections, we can learn to cherish the moments and lessons each relationship brings without clinging to what’s no longer meant to stay.
Reflection
Take a moment to think about the people who’ve been part of your journey:
- Who came into your life for a reason?
- Which relationships enriched a particular season of your life?
- Who are the people who’ve stayed for the long haul?
Gratitude for each type of relationship can bring clarity and peace. Each person—whether they stayed for a moment or a lifetime—helped shape the person you are today.
So, the next time someone crosses your path, ask yourself: Are they here for a reason, a season, or a lifetime? Regardless of the answer, their presence holds meaning, and their impact is part of your story.
